I have been living in Lima for almost two years. There is a lot that I have come to really appreciate about the culture here and that I know that I will miss when I leave in August. However, there are still a lot of things that I will never understand.
Here are a few...
1. Why do they give you Halls cough drops instead of regular hard candies with your bill at a restaurant?
2. How it can be legal to make a left turn from the far right lane at an intersection?
3. Why-- instead of letting the stoplight do its job-- police officers stand in the middle of the intersection and direct traffic with glowing light sabers (red or pink)?
4. How can Peruvians stand eating rice EVERY. SINGLE. DAY.?
5. How can the sound of the horn from the D´Anafria ice cream guy biking down the street evoke such deep ´warm and fuzzy´ feelings to Peruvians? To me, it sounds like a duck dying. Screaming VERY loudly and then dying.
6. Why are they so obsessed with guinea pigs? OK, I admit that I have also developed a slightly unhealthy obsession with the furry creatures since moving here, but Peruvians have me beat. They eat them for dinner and put them on t-shirts. Recently, I learned that they also use their fuzzy faces to sell credit cards at banks...
...and promote candidates during elections.
Oh Peru, you gotta love this place...

A lot of the candy I got in Italy also tasted a lot like cough drops.... clearly different tastes in what makes a good candy!
